About The Meridian Times
Our History
The Meridian Times was founded in 1968 by a consortium of Washington journalists who believed the capital deserved a publication committed to rigorous, independent reporting free from the influence of political proprietors. From a single newsroom on Press Row, the paper grew to become one of the most-read news organizations in the region, expanding its digital edition in 2004 and launching a national audience strategy in 2017.
Through five decades of political turbulence, economic upheaval, and the transformation of the media landscape, The Meridian Times has remained employee-governed and reader-supported. We have never accepted equity investment from political action committees, government entities, or technology platforms, and we do not intend to.
Our Mission
We exist to produce original journalism that holds power accountable, explains complex events with clarity, and gives readers the information they need to participate in democratic life. We cover national politics and policy, global affairs, business and economics, science and the environment, and culture — with the sustained attention those subjects deserve.
Our editorial decisions are made without input from advertisers, subscribers, or outside investors. The newsroom operates under an ethics policy that requires reporters to disclose potential conflicts of interest and prohibits undisclosed financial relationships with sources.
